Centuries ago, Japanese families discovered that the surplus from the konjac root—a plant cultivated in Japan for more than 1,500 years—could be transformed into an incredibly soft cleansing sponge. Through a slow, natural process of freezing and drying during the winter months, the plant fibers became pure, odorless, and exceptionally gentle.
The result was a sponge soft enough to wash the delicate skin of newborn babies.
That is the true origin of the Japanese konjac sponge.

Japanese konjac has a character all its own.
Much of the highest-quality konjac is still grown in Gunma Prefecture, where pristine mountain spring water and mineral-rich soil create ideal growing conditions.
When soaked in water, the sponge transforms into a soft, jelly-like cushion that glides effortlessly across the skin. It gently removes dirt, excess oil, and dead skin cells—often without the need for soap.
But what truly sets an authentic Japanese konjac sponge apart is how it is made.
Traditional makers still follow a weeks-long process of freezing, thawing, and drying. These techniques have been passed down from one generation to the next.
This is craftsmanship—not mass manufacturing.
Tokowaka (常若): Forever Young, Forever Fresh
There is a beautiful Japanese concept that we often think about.
Tokowaka (常若).
It means “forever young, forever fresh.”
One of the best examples of Tokowaka can be found at Japan’s most sacred shrine, Ise Grand Shrine. Every twenty years, the shrine is completely rebuilt—not because it has become old, but because renewal is how tradition stays alive.
Master craftsmen teach apprentices during each rebuilding.
The wood changes.
The people change.
But the spirit remains.
That is Tokowaka.
