Who Loves Japanese Konjac Sponges? What We’ve Learned from Over 20 Markets and Trade Shows

Over the past two years, we’ve brought our small table to more than twenty markets, festivals, and trade shows across the Lower Mainland.

And every time, we discover something new.

There are still so many people who have never heard of a konjac sponge.

Some stop at our table and ask,

“What is a konjac sponge?”

Others pick one up and say,

“I’ve never seen this before.”

And, of course, there are those who already know it.

They walk straight toward our table, smile, and tell us how much they love using their konjac sponge.

After meeting hundreds of people face-to-face, having conversations, answering questions, and hearing stories from people who actually use our sponges, we began to notice something interesting.

The people who love konjac sponges are not all the same.

They come from different generations and have very different skincare habits and lifestyles.

Some are looking for a gentler way to care for their skin.

Some are trying to reduce plastic in their everyday lives.

Some want something simple.

And some are simply curious about this unusual little sponge made from a plant they may never have encountered before.

So, rather than simply telling you what a konjac sponge is, we thought we would share what we have actually seen and heard from our customers across North America.

Who is reaching for a konjac sponge?

And why do they keep coming back?

First, What Exactly Is a Konjac Sponge?

Before we introduce the people we’ve met, there is a story behind the sponge that we think is worth knowing.

A konjac sponge is made from konjac, a plant that has been cultivated and eaten in Japan for more than a thousand years.

Konjac has a long history as a traditional food in Japanese culture. But the plant also has another, lesser-known story.

It has been part of Japan’s natural beauty traditions for centuries.

Konjac sponges are said to have a history of more than 400 years as a traditional Japanese natural beauty product.

What fascinated us most, however, was the story we heard directly from the konjac farmers themselves.

According to the tradition passed down among konjac-growing families, farmers began using the soft natural material to wash their babies.

That simple idea stayed with us.

Imagine a time before shelves filled with specialized baby products, facial cleansers, exfoliating brushes, and disposable beauty tools.

There was a plant.

There was warm water.

And there was a soft, natural material that could gently cleanse the skin.

When we heard this story, we were genuinely moved.

It reminded us that sometimes the most thoughtful ideas don’t begin in a laboratory or with a marketing campaign.

They begin with people observing nature and finding a simple way to make everyday life a little better.

A Natural Way to Cleanse and Care for Your Skin

One of the things that makes a konjac sponge so interesting is its simplicity.

Once soaked in warm water, the sponge becomes incredibly soft and springy.

It can be used with your favourite cleanser, or simply with water.

The fine texture helps gently cleanse the skin while providing mild physical exfoliation — helping remove surface buildup and dead skin cells without the need for an abrasive scrub.

And there is something else that makes it particularly appealing today.

It is made from plants.

Our konjac sponges are made from natural konjac plant fibre.

There is no plastic sponge material.

There is no synthetic exfoliating mesh.

And because it is plant-based and biodegradable, it does not contribute to microplastic pollution in the way that synthetic exfoliating materials can.

Once a konjac sponge has reached the end of its useful life, it can naturally break down and return to the earth.

For us, that is not just a product feature.

It is part of the reason we were drawn to the product in the first place.

So, Who Is Using Konjac Sponges?

After more than twenty markets and trade shows, we’ve started to see some familiar faces — or rather, some familiar types of customers.

Here are a few of them.

The Person Looking for a Gentler Approach

Some of the people who spend the longest time at our table are those who tell us that their skin doesn’t like a lot of products.

They are often cautious about exfoliation.

They don’t want something rough.

They don’t want to scrub.

They simply want something gentle enough to become part of their everyday routine.

When they squeeze a wet konjac sponge for the first time, the reaction is often immediate:

“Oh! It’s so soft.”

That moment never gets old.

The Parent Who Wants Something Simple

Then there are parents.

The story of konjac farmers using the material to wash their babies is particularly meaningful to us because it reflects the original spirit behind this traditional product.

Something natural.

Something simple.

Something gentle.

We often meet parents who are looking for ways to simplify what they use at home.

Instead of adding another complicated product to the bathroom shelf, a simple plant-based sponge can become part of an everyday bathing or skincare routine.

Teenagers and Young Adults

Younger customers often have very different concerns.

Oiliness.

Buildup.

Clogged pores.

And the temptation to try every new skincare trend they see online.

For these customers, the appeal of a konjac sponge is often its simplicity.

Our charcoal konjac sponge is particularly popular with people who are looking for a simple cleansing and exfoliating step.

Instead of scrubbing harder and adding more products, the idea is to take a gentler approach.

Sometimes, less really can be more.

The “I Don’t Do Skincare” Customer

We love these customers.

They usually weren’t planning to stop at our table.

Their partner brought them over.

They pick up the sponge.

Squeeze it.

Look at it.

And then ask:

“So, what do I actually do with this?”

The answer is wonderfully simple.

Wet it.

Use it.

Rinse it.

Hang it to dry.

That’s it.

For someone who doesn’t want a complicated skincare routine, that simplicity can be surprisingly appealing.

The People Who Are Trying to Reduce Plastic

This group has been growing.

One of the first questions we increasingly hear at markets is:

“Is it plastic?”

No.

It’s made from konjac plant fibre.

For people who are trying to make more thoughtful choices about what they bring into their homes, this matters.

We don’t believe that one small product can solve the world’s environmental challenges.

But sustainability doesn’t always have to begin with something dramatic.

Sometimes it starts with replacing one everyday item.

Then another.

And another.

A small change that becomes part of a bigger habit.

And Then There Are the People Who Simply Love the Feeling

Of course, not everyone buys a konjac sponge because of a specific skincare concern.

Some people just love how it feels.

That soft, almost jelly-like texture.

The ritual of soaking it in warm water.

The feeling of gently washing your face at the beginning or end of the day.

There is something almost meditative about it.

And perhaps this is one of the reasons a product with such an old history still feels surprisingly relevant today.

We live in a world filled with increasingly complicated beauty routines.

Konjac offers something very different.

Natural. Simple. Gentle.

Sometimes that’s enough.

What We’ve Learned from Meeting People Face-to-Face

After more than twenty events, one thing has become very clear to us.

There are still many people in North America who have never heard of a konjac sponge.

And that’s okay.

In fact, that’s part of what makes introducing it so much fun.

We get to watch someone discover it for the very first time.

We get to hear their questions.

We get to tell them about the farmers in Gunma.

We get to share the story of a plant that has been part of Japanese food culture for more than a thousand years and a natural beauty tradition that has continued for centuries.

And sometimes, after all the explanations, it comes down to one simple moment:

They squeeze the sponge.

They smile.

And they say,

“I want to try this.”

That moment is why we love meeting our customers in person.

Because behind every sale is a conversation.

Behind every conversation is a person.

And behind this little sponge is a much bigger story about nature, tradition, craftsmanship, and the simple things that can make everyday life a little better.

A Little of Japan, for Your Everyday

For us, introducing konjac sponges in North America isn’t simply about selling another skincare product.

It’s about sharing a small piece of a tradition that we grew up knowing in Japan.

A tradition that began with a humble plant.

A tradition connected to farmers, families, and everyday life.

And a product that brings together something we increasingly value today:

natural materials, simplicity, and sustainability.

From a konjac farm in Gunma to a bathroom in Canada, it’s a small journey.

But sometimes, small things carry the biggest stories.

A little of Japan, for your everyday.
